Clean Water Initiative asks voters to decide: mining or fish ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) _ Alaskans going to the polls today (Tuesday) are choosing between mining or fish when voting on the Clean Water Initiative. Ballot Measure 4 calls for imposing two water quality standards on any new large-scale mines in the state. If passed, the initiative would restrict large, new mines from releasing toxic pollutants into water that would adversely affect the health of humans or salmon. Opponents say if passed, the initiative would kill large-scale mining in Alaska. Supporters say the measure is needed to save Bristol Bay's wild salmon streams from the Pebble Mine, a huge copper and gold deposit poised for development near Bristol Bay. Pebble is near some of the world's most productive salmon streams. |
