Wet April keeps fire danger low

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) _ A wetter-than-usual April is keeping the fire danger in the Interior down.

Robert Schmoll, fire management officer for the Division of Forestry in Fairbanks, says so far the fire danger has stayed at a minimum. He says there was one fire two weeks ago out by Salcha, but that's been it.

The wet conditions are something the Alaska Fire Service is having to deal with.

The service is attempting to conduct several prescribed burns on military training ranges around Fairbanks and Delta Junction. But so far the fire service has not been able to get a good burn going.

April is normally the driest month of the year. But this April was one of the snowiest and wettest on record in Fairbanks.
