Juneau's black bears are slow to

wake up

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) _ Juneau's black bears are slow to wake up this year.

That's the opinion of Area Management Biologist Neil Barten of State Fish and Game.

He says it's understandable why the bears are sleeping in. It's been a cold spring.

Barten says they haven't heard of anything at this point, but he expects bear activity will pick up any day now.

He says when they do wake up, the bears are going to be very hungry.

Barten says he was out yesterday in the Lemon Creek area and didn't like the look of it in some places where he saw garbage cans out next to homes.

Local law only allows cans to go out on garbage pick up day.

Barten says people are going to have to start paying better attention.
