Old Fairbanks ski lodge burns

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) _ A Fairbanks downhill skiing landmark has burned.

The deserted lodge at Cleary Summit was consumed by fire Tuesday morning.

Cleary Summit Ski Area was the first downhill ski area in Fairbanks.

The three-story, A-frame, 7,000-square-foot lodge was built in the early 1960s but has been empty since the venue shut down in 1993.

Steve and Brenda Birdsall own Mount Aurora Skiland less than a mile away and owned the burned lodge, a local landmark.

They say they were hoping to develop it into some kind of enterprise and that Japanese tourism companies that expressed interest in the building.

The state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
